Finding a good place to eat on a Saturday afternoon around Chelsea in the unseasonably cold weather is harder than it sounds. My usual haunts around Sloane Square are more suitable for sunnier, warmer weather. However, help is at hand with the presence of Colbert, a stone’s throw away from Sloane Square tube station. I have been keen to visit Colbert’s sister restaurant, Brasserie Zedel in Piccadilly for a while so finding Colbert so close to home was a cause for celebration.

Colbert brings French brasserie dining to the glitterati of Chelsea with a packed menu full of classic French delicacies. I dined with Monsieur for lunch on Easter Saturday and found the restaurant to be buzzing with the great and the good of Chelsea.

For starter I chose snails in garlic butter (Escargots à la Bourguignonne on the menu) and Monsieur had goats cheese and beetroot salad with walnuts (Salade de Mâche avec Chèvre, Betterave et Noix on the menu). Monsieur had never had snails before but we both enjoyed them along with dipping the warm bread into the hot garlic butter. His salad looked and tasted fresh and appetising.

My main course of veal escalope with honey glazed root vegetables was decadently buttery as only French food can be. The veal was tender inside and crispy on the outside with a velvety gravy drizzled on top. My arteries will not thank me though. Monsieur’s minute steak was cooked perfectly and the fries were deliciously crisp.

Plum and almond tart

We indulged in the plum and almond tart for dessert after seeing it on display as we came in. The filling was moist but would have been improved with more plums.

Overall our Colbert experience was enjoyable since we found the food to be as tasty as good French food should be. The speed of service towards the end let the experience down slightly but it would not deter me from visiting again. It could almost become my regular French brasserie (…when I fancy a bit of traditional French food in my life).
