A short walk from the Sloaney Pony pub in Parsons Green is Nuntee, a Thai restaurant. Beautiful orchids greet you as you walk in as well as low hanging lights that were pretty but hazardous! I went to Nuntee to celebrate a friend’s birthday with a big group so we were seated in the back room. The banquette seating and comfy silk cushions made the place look stylish and inviting.
Everyone was hungry and thirsty so to have to wait 45mins to get even a drink was painful. However when my pot of kissing dragons, flowering jasmine tea arrived I was not disappointed with the taste. Compared to the regular jasmine tea they also served, it was smoother and not as dry from less tannin. When it came to ordering, the majority of the party went for set menu 2 with some alterations. We substituted the pak choi dish for tofu with ginger and the prawns for king prawns in one of the main dishes. Both requests were accommodated without fuss but much confusion – our fault more than there’s I’d say due to the enthusiasm of the group.
The starter platter from the set menu was flavoursome with the duck spring rolls the favourite among the diners. I also particularly enjoyed the chicken and prawn dim sum.
The stand out dish of the main meal was the duck red curry which was rich and crammed full of fruit, including whole lychee and pineapple chunks. It was elegantly served in a metal bowl, on top of a metal pot containing a candle to keep the dish warm. The other dishes in the set menu included chicken, king prawn and the tofu dish we swapped in, all accompanied by egg fried rice. All were tasty but the duck definitely outshone them by its spicy, distinctive flavour. One of the guys in our party had pad thai with king prawns, soft shell crab and king scallops. He described the taste as disappointingly bland with the crab distinctly lacking in flavour. Personally I’ve never had a pad thai I have enjoyed the taste of so I avoid ordering it.
For dessert we had ice cream which was part of the set menu. The better choice out of strawberry or vanilla was by far the vanilla. The strawberry ice cream had crystallised and broke apart when I tried to cut it in half to share. Unfortunately though, the vanilla did not contain real vanilla pod which was a shame.
Overall I’d say you can’t go wrong with choosing a curry and rice at Nuntee but be patient. Also watch your head otherwise you might find your face in a low hanging light!
